Confidence and mindset is a big part of success in business

John:                     Yeah, I remember when we first spoke, and it’s interesting that I gave you that advice. Seven years ago, you’d be charging $1,000. That doesn’t fall into my I get out of bed rate now as Byron would say. But it’s interesting, isn’t it? And a lot of the… I talk a lot about this. You would know this better than anyone, Matt, because we’ve known each other for so long.

John:                     A lot of this shit is mindset and confidence. There’s so much of a psychological element at play here. And it’s interesting that… This might be true for a lot of other people in the group as well. Sometimes you just need someone to just give that little nudge in the right direction. And because subconsciously, you’re at the time probably thinking, “Fuck, I’m only charging $500 a month. I can’t ask someone for $1,000. That’s a lot of money. That’s someone’s mortgage repayment.”

John:                     But the minute you do ask and you get it, more importantly, you actually get it, that belief system is completely gone. And then you think, “What the fuck was I doing?” And that has been true for me in my journey. I remember back charging $1,500, $2,000 to build websites. And then I had a mentor at the time and he said, “Triple your prices.” And I thought, “Fuck.” And I felt really uncomfortable with that. That’s…

John:                     And then I started getting a few. And I think when you come from having a job like we did, I’d only ever worked for an hourly rate, and I got my pay at the end of the week. And, for me, like earning $800 a week was a lot of money. So, I was actually scared of asking people for money. I wasn’t comfortable with it at all.

John:                     I don’t know if you ever felt like that, Matt, but I remember going back to 2002, 2003 when I was doing freelance web design, I remember handing someone a quote for $3,000 and I felt like I was being absolutely obnoxious. And they didn’t blink. They said, “Yeah, that’s fine, John. We’ll take care of that later.”

Matt:                     Yeah.

John:                     So, there are some really weird belief systems that a lot of us have that just aren’t true. And when you start rubbing shoulders and listening to people that have pushed through those limiting beliefs, you come out the other side and think, “Jesus Christ, why the fuck was I charging $300 a month?” We got a few people in the group that were charging a few hundred dollars to build websites and probably a little bit less to do SEO.

John:                     One thing that changed my thinking was that a good friend of mine started a large scale SEO agency in Sydney. And we would often talk and he’d me about some of the clients that had on board for like 5,000 a month, 7,000, and even one at $10,000 a month. And I thought, “Right, if I was running an agency…” and this is the difference, right? Sitting at home, you don’t have the pressures of fucking staff, all of your overheads, your lease, your insurance, and all your operational costs and everything else.

John:                     So, it can be real easy to think, “Oh, I’ll just operate at this low level.” But if you were dropped into an agency setting and you had 10 fucking staff and $4,000 a month worth of rent to pay, you’d have no choice. You’d be thinking, “Holy fuck, we can’t be mucking around here charging $500 a month for SEO. We need to get serious.”

Matt:                     Okay.

John:                     So, when I started talking with him, I just thought, “Why the fuck am I mucking around at these low numbers?” And at the time I think I was charging $1,000, or $1,500 a month. So, there is a lot of… a lot of this is psychological and this is why I talk about it as much as I do within the group, because a lot of it’s just mindset.
